MP01, Jasper Morrison's minimal handset for Punkt.

In the age of the never-ending flow of notifications, it is easy to miss out on the really important matters. Those who are worried about technology taking over our lives completely, refuse using or abandon their existing smartphones for a hoped peace of mind. There is no doubt, however, that mobile handsets are indispensable tools for effective communication, so some sort of golden lane should be found, or rather re-found, between a world of constant beeps and complete isolation. The MP01 mobile phone lies exactly on this line. Designed by Jasper Morrison for Punkt., and launched at London Design Festival, the device marries 21st century technologies with the most essential functions. MP01 is capable of making calls, managing text messages, and has a built-in clock and agenda feature to keep the owner organised.

Since no complex technological innovations needed to be built in, a greater emphasis could be laid on the design and the execution materials. Featuring a bright screen, big round buttons, an elegant monochrome surface and camera-paint finish, the phone is a beautiful and understated exercise in high quality design. The materials and assemblance suggest that it was made to last, and the lack of operating system and apps needing constant update and space ensures that the phone will be fully functional for years to come.

Still, it would be a mistake to say that MP01 is lacking 21st century inventions: with damage-resistant gorilla glass, hq audio capacities including noise cancellation, long lasting battery life, and bluetooth for PC/Mac synchronisation, the handset is making the most out of what technology has to offer for maximum comfort, function, and aesthetic value. Following Punkt.’s mission, Morrison hopes that his design will help people to maintain a healthier relationship with technology.
