Giulio Iacchetti's luxe mechanical pen & pencil collection
When all the buzz is around digital pens, creating something absolutely mechanical seems a bit archaic, and almost revolutionary. With his pen and pencil set Neri, Italian product designer Giulio Iacchetti wanted to make exactly a statement. He thinks that writing tools are perfect for articulating the essence of design, as they are simple, sophisticated, and of course extremely functional, working as a prosthesis not only of one’s hands but more importantly, mind as well. Though Iacchetti collaborates with several companies, he launched the collection under his self-founded label Internoitaliano, signaling that the project is a deeply personal matter.
Made of a rod of high-quality aluminium that was anodized and sand blasted, the pens are available in grey, silver, and black finishes. Shape-wise, they are the simplest void of any unnecessary fittings, ensuring a smooth surface. The sole intrusion on the minimalist form is a tiny, circular dial positioned near the tip, that replaces the usual click mechanism that operates the nib from the back.
The tiny metal wheel adjusts the length of the pencil lead and operates the click of the nib, working just like a compass for technical drawings. With such allusions, Iacchetti managed to take the manual aspect to the maximum, making Neri stand clearly apart from the products of the digital revolution, celebrating trustworthy analogue mechanisms.
