A sculptural concrete stationery set by Yen-Wen Tseng
Tseng set out to create pieces that are not only purposeful but also follow a design philosophy nodding to sculpture. That aim, and the fact that he worked together with Taipei-based 22 Design Studio, an office specialised in stationery and other home accessories, favouring concrete as the base material, Tseng designed a line of miniature concrete sculptures that have a function besides being decorative objects. The pen pot, notecard holder, and tape dispenser all follow the same design language, echoing each other’s cylindrical and straight cubic forms.
The high-density concrete used is resistant to chipping and cracking, making the pieces durable and applicable for daily use. To further enhance their aesthetic quality, Tseng chose two shades, a grey and a bright blue from the CMYK system, and applied a special spraying technique to colour the objects. With the minimal yet accentual forms, bright colours, and considerable weight, the Merge set is truly refreshing amongst the array of plastic stationery items.
