Chagall painting featured on aluminum facade of Tel Aviv school

Local Paritzki and Liani Architects designed an extension to a French primary school in the Neve Tzedek district of Tel Aviv. Quite obviously the architects were inspired by the school’s namesake, Marc Chagall. The Russian-born Jewish painter fulfilled a successful art career in Paris,in the first decades of the 20th century. He is known for his dream-like large-scale paintings and stained glass windows, many of which were made for official commission. The Jewish-French connection and imaginative pictorial language made Chagall an evident choice to be the eponym of a primary school, and Paritzki & Liani were happy to elaborate further on the reference.

As the most obvious allusion, the facade features a scene from a Chagall painting. The building’s north facing end is clad with perforated aluminum panels. The sheets were punched by a special computer-led 3D pixel system, which followed the hues and shadows of the 1904 painting ‘Over the Town’.  The result is a hologram-like aluminum installation, that creates an optical wave depending on the weather conditions and the viewer’s viewpoint.

Although the image showing a floating couple above a town is left colourless, the school is not lacking Chagallian hues. The Western facade features fins of coloured glass that are fixed to the wall. The colour of the panels is repeated on the flooring of the correlating classroom, adding a touch of movement to the otherwise minimally designed spaces.

The Chagallian inspiration does not cease with that: the overall concept of the extension is centered around the idea of a Mediterranean town. This is what the layout of the two volumes follow with the common spaces, passageways, and small squares.
