3D printed entrance for EU Presidency building

theface_dus_eu

For the next 6 months, the Netherlands will be the president of the European Union, meaning that Amsterdam will host a range of meetings until June. The political gathering will be held in temporary buildings, amongst which the European Building got a striking, 3D printed entrance section by DUS Architects. The architecture studio is known for their canalside 3D print-based designs, and for this pop-up venture they took lessons learned from their earlier projects, and married it with inspiration drawn from the European Union’s structure and symbolism.

The building is located in the Marine district, in an area where yachts were used to built. That past is traceable in the exciting sail-like shape of the entrance facade. The foldings of the sails create organic alcoves on the side of the structure, housing a series of communal benches. The seatings were created by the 3D printing technique, and opposed to the white of the facade, they play in the official EU-blue. Their concrete seating ensures a safe base, while the triangular pattern of the booth’s  insides recall the diversity and convergence of the EU countries with their different sizes and shapes amalgamating into a coherent whole.

The whole structure is extremely striking in itself, but the sculptural shape becomes more alive after sunset: a line of spotlights along with atmospheric, pulsing lights set the entrance into motion, creating a dynamic atmosphere. Since the EU presidency as well as the building is temporary, the entrance section is made of 100% bio-plastic, that can be fully recycled after its dismantling.
