Thonet releases 'All Seasons' collection for year-round use
In preparation for the coming outdoor seasons, Thonet releases a few of their classic steel chairs in weather-resistant versions and bright colours, matching the spirit of the warmer months. Four designs by three Bauhaus teachers were selected for the project, that have been steadily at the core of Thonet’s collection since the 1920s. The s33 and s34 by Mart Stam, the s35 by Marcel Breuer, and the s533 by Mies Van der Rohe are all made by bending a 3m-long steel tube. The masters asked Thonet themselves whether they can apply the company’s technique of bending wood to tubular steel furniture, and a glorious collaboration began.
Regarding the popularity of the pieces, it is surprising that the the chairs have not been refitted so far for outdoor use, but after their coming debut at imm 2016, the Bauhaus icons will be available for anyone to fill their gardens and terraces.
In order to survive diverse climatic environments, the regular steel used for the chairs has been treated with a special, weather-resistant coating called ThonetProtect. The upholstery used is made of UV-resistant mesh, that, just like the steel base, is available in a range of colours that can mixed and matched by the customer. The outdoor-tuned finishes make Thonet All Seasons pieces a lifelong investment, and the customisation options make sure that they match the owner’s taste perfectly.
