Paolo Benevelli's 2in1 of a board game and serving plate
“Don’t play with your food” is probably one of the most commonplace warnings we’ve all heard from our parents, grandparents, nannies, teachers, etc. throughout our childhood. Now all the tension from that restriction can be released thanks to Italian designer Paolo Benevelli. Created on pasta manufacturer Aglutén’s commission, the Eat and Play plate is a serving surface that doubles its function as a boarding game. The idea was that as a Christmas project, Aglutén wanted to come up with a special plate that would have another function besides serving food.
Benevelli started from the square pattern decoration, which inspired him to finish a checkerboard paint, and thus the idea of the board-game-plate was born. Such playful turns are not unfamiliar for Benevelli’s portfolio. As a trained architect and designer he is appreciated for his seriously functional furniture pieces, but he eases the strictness of his line with the inclusion of some fun accessories. While Eat & Play comes with the necessary figurines, there should be no doubt that the old rebuke will be disregarded by many, and food will serve as an essential tool of game.
