Bouroullec Brothers x Hay introduce new outdoor furniture range at Maison & Objet
The Bouroullec brothers will premiere their latest piece at Maison & Objet Paris, starting today. The duo designed and outdoor furniture set for Hay, marking their second collaboration with the Danish company. The Palissade collection features a range of high and low tables with matching dining and lounge chairs, benches, and sofas, all suited to be used outside the house. Made entirely from metal, Palissade was designed to withstand weather conditions and heavy usage.
The shape was also inspired by the material’s properties, as it can be bent, cut, and welded resulting in a continuous, uniform, moulded look. The bent shape of the bench is reiterated in the tables’ flat top sloping off to form the legs. The chairs follow the same design language and are available in a number of variations with different backrest heights and optional armrests and cushions for extra comfort.
Although operating with curves, the Palissade set could not be described as curvy by any means, and it rather carries a mildly sharp, industrial air. The Bouroullecs intended to come up with a set that is “strong without being bulky, elegant without being fragile”. Visually, this strength and interest in geometrical solutions is further strengthened by the vertical slats along each piece.
As a key design element, they provide an optical illusion of light and shadow when sunrays strike through the furniture. Besides this visual play, these anatomically designed slats are highly functional as well as they let air and water pass through, which is key for outdoor furniture. The 13 pieces of the collection are available in 3 colours, and the wide variation of shapes and sizes make it suitable for various environments from cafes through parks to private balconies.
