The Shoe Leather Museum by Doepel Strijkers
The Shoe Leather Education Museum, known as SLEM, is a newly-completed project in a quiet town in Netherlands called Waalwijk that has a strong shoe industry heritage. This museum also functions as an educational center, bringing economic and environmental benefits to the local community.
Doepel Strijkers, a Rotterdam-based architectural team designed the space, which is accommodating considerable exhibitions, meeting and working spaces. The project offers playful and engaging design solutions that complement the existing building and brings the sense of spatial openness and versatility.
The interior design was reduced to the essential elements, which created a free following sequence of spaces full of natural light. SLEM's identity is reflected on the use of a monochromatic colour palette. The project also mixes a contemporary style with antique details and contains old furniture recalling the building's previous purposes.
They also have a social role. Local trades and youth are employed; thus, they hoped to get back their social value and past work.
