Men’s grooming is something of a trend now; barber shops are popping all around the cities of the globe, seeing the revival of a trade that, though very much alive in some cultures, seems to have faded in the Western civilisation. The newly reborn all-men salons follow two directions design-wise: concentrating exclusively on the stronger sex, they are all about testosterone and therefore filled with traditional men’s attributes, while since inspired by a long-forgotten oul’ tradition, interiors carry a strong heritage-vibe. Think all-leather seats, dark colours, solid wood vintage furniture, sharp knives, and the smell of some high quality all-natural wax - you get the picture.

Murdock, the British gentlemen’s grooming brand, if did not completely break with this imagery, but braved to give the whole a contemporary twist when designing their newest Soho outlet. Built to be their flagship store, the salon intends to capture the very essence of the 'Murdock Man'. Owner Brendan Murdock commissioned designer Erik Munro to create the interior of the space. Primary inspiration was the location: Brewer street used to be the home of gin palaces, breweries, hunting stores, making it an essential manly destination. Munro was building from this heritage, but arriving from the fashion world, he managed to soften the overtly harsh masculinity of the neighbourhood’s past.

A refreshing addition to the still vintage-y interior were the series of graphics by artist Luke Edward Hall. While his images carry a certain amount of British old-school quality, with the minimal lines and vibrant colours they draw in a surprisingly contemporary feel and make Murdock indeed outstanding amongst men’s grooming brands.
