Generator Paris is not your average hostel

Generator Hostels specializes in creating design-oriented, hip, but still affordable accomodation options for the style-conscious traveller. With properties throughout Europe's trendiest cities, they are quickly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The newest addition to their roster of well-designed hostels is Generator Paris which sits in a restructured former office block in the 10th arrondissement.

Generator Paris opened its doors for the general public in February. It's the largest Generator Hostel so far, spanning eight floors with a total of 916 beds. Rooms with anywhere between 2 to 10 beds are on offer, giving solo or group travellers some much needed flexibility. The shared rooms come complete with bunk beds featuring USB power interfaces and a locker underneath them.

The hostel's design cannot go unmentioned. Generator's furniture collection is all about mixing the highs and the lows, pairing Tom Dixon lights with thrift shop gems. The resulting atmosphere is open-minded, snazzy, and slightly bohemian. It's a refreshing break from the broken-down budget hostels and the stuffy "luxury" of star-studded accomodations. It feels organic and modern without trying too hard. Anwar Mehkayech and the DesignAgency team chose to keep the rectangular concrete pillars of the former office and incorporated them into the dorms. This lends a sort of rustic, almost industrial vibe to some of the spaces.

Compared to the large, shared multi-bed rooms the private rooms are slightly more expensive and decidedly less "clublike". All the unnecessary hotel frills have been eliminated. That includes the small TVs that noone watches and the large cupboards that only restrict movement and take up space. What's left are tastefully minimal rooms with double beds and (if you opt for it) a roomy balcony with a breathtaking view and your very own hammock. Needless to say, we would take that over a small LCD screen any day.

While the rooms at Generator are roomy and comfortable, they really don't want you staying in there all that much. That's why the community spaces are even more inviting and warm. The bar and restaurant downstairs serves hot food and cold cocktails in a lofty contemporary space. There is also a rooftop bar set to open later in the summer, where guests can enjoy the previously mentioned breathtaking view with the beverage of their choice.

generator hostel paris 5 the face

Generator Paris is an impressive and affordable place to stay. It's a hostel, but one that challenges the notions of the whole category. A hostel that replaces cramped rooms and bad food with stylish design and balcony hammocks. Here's to hoping that more hostels will go the same route.
