Nendo
teamed up with a local force Nature’s Way to create a composite store in Tokyo for organic skincare. The Beauty Library, tucked away in a quiet street at Aoyama, goes beyond the concept of selling toiletry, as they focus on inner bodycare as well. The store is a fusion of a cosmetics shop and a cafe, both eco-friendly and organic-driven in their approach. Customers are free to browse and test products while sipping on drinks that nurture their bodies from the inside.

The products are arranged on well-organised wooden shelves, and are supplemented by plenty of information, both tactile and online. Tablets are installed for those who wish to read more about the use and origin of the products. QR codes are also used for providing further reading and allowing customers to take home the products virtually, with an option to buy them later online.

The layout and the concept of obtaining knowledge is what upgrades the store to the level of a library. To give this feature a physical form, Nendo designed enclosed, intimate areas reminiscent of self-study rooms. Incorporated into the shelving system and featuring bracket lights, it provides space for absorbed reading and learning. Moreover, the store also involves an “annex”, hidden across a courtyard, that can be used for hosting workshops, events, or even smaller-scale parties.

Design-wise, the interior fits in line with Nendo’s minimalist aesthetics, that was spiced up a bit by the organic ideology of the store. The Beauty Library is characterised by light, airy spaces, featuring neatly organised, geometric furniture of plain wood, and white tiles on the café side. The overall feel is friendly, luminous, and invites women (and men) to spend some quality time with nurturing their bodies inside and out.
