314 Architecture Studio create spectacular eyewear store
The c_29 / optimist optical shop in central Chalkida, Greece, is indeed a spectacular experience for the eye. Constructed by Athens-based 314 Architecture Studio in an old interwar listed building, all elements of the interior were morphed to form a cohesive visionary space. The long, airy room of the shop reaches from the central market to a backside courtyard, situated at the core of the building. Since it is not possible to see through the store and the garden area, a wall of 45 degrees was installed between the two, completely clad with mirror, providing the much-needed visual connection with a twist.
Mirroring is a crucial technique applied overall the interior: along with white paint and pure glass, it was used to transform functional objects to prismatic sculptures. The result is a space resembling an eerie minimal sculpture park in glass-land, where it turns out that the magical objects are in reality functional furniture pieces.
Yet, the interior is by no means futuristic or alien: the exposed stones of the wall refer to the building’s past, while a bar situated on the terrace brings in a sense of ease and friendliness. 314 studio did an excellent job with bringing in something extraordinary and surprising to eyewear store designs, by getting inspired from the reflections and absorbance of light, and translating that into a sensual interplay of minimal textures.
