The Bouroullec's Kiosque premieres at the Tuileries for FIAC
Accompanying this year’s FIAC (Paris’s nr. 1. International Contemporary Art Fair), the Bouroullec brothers installed two identical pavilions in the garden of Tuileries. The Kiosque presentation means the culmination of a 3-year-long project, that saw the duo designing and producing a mobile, flexible, and multi-functional space on the commission of local property developer Emerige.
The finished object is a powder-coated steel, box-shaped, modular structure, with ceiling-to-floor glass windows on three sides and a solid door on the 4th one. The sliding panels of the longer sides allow the construct to be completely or partially shut, making it adaptable to different contexts, locations, and uses. Functional as a conference room, a relaxation space, or an exhibition unit, the flexibility and minimal design restricted to the essentials also contribute to the Kiosque’s versatility.
As common for the Bouroullecs, the details that make their designs outstanding are not only decorative but were composed after thoughtful considerations to achieve maximum functionality. The broad roof overhangs the walls, creating a sheltered external space. A row of lanterns hanged around its outer edges outlines the pavilion’s shape and provides sufficient light inside and out.
The roof’s zigzag shape, though a decorative addition, is not solely for visual appeal; it means that the top can be folded easily and put away into a container; together with the rest of the house, as the whole thing takes only 3 hours to assemble, and all parts fit into a semitrailer. The modules are on display until 5 November in the Tuileries, after which they will be handed to the City of Paris as a donation by the Bouroullecs, and will start a tour across the city districts hosting various social and cultural projects.
