SO-IL proposes a Brooklyn gallery with unique geometry
Dubbed 'an exploration in soft form', the planned building works with unique geometry. Connecting the concept to the industrial nature of the neighborhood is concrete, used in abundance. The building itself will be an asymmetric concrete volume, with subtle curves and interruptions breaking it up. This forms an integral part of the concept. In the architect's own words: "a cluster of shells acts to diffuse an exterior presence and shape the building's interior." The 'soft' geometry of the mass counteracts the strong, industrial surfaces, lending a distinctive aesthetic to the structure.
The outer shells exist in a tension with the programming, lights, and circulation of the building. Short apertures near the top of the interior carry natural light into the gallery, illuminating the clean space, while blurring the edges of the interior. This practice challenges the perception of a well-defined space and creates an enticing experience.
A variety of openings open up the otherwise closed space, placing an even bigger emphasis on the volumetric experience.
The completion of Artes Amant is scheduled for 2017. Check out SO-IL's website to learn more about the gallery and their other projects.
