BIG's first structure for Hualien Residences completed
Hualian Residences is a large-scale project by the Taiwan Land Development Corporation, which aims at building a holiday-residential area some 5 km off the rapidly developing town of Hualian. The city, set in the picturesque East coast of the country, is expanding on new territories, providing its dwellers a place for recreation, reuniting them with the stunning natural surroundings that is within easy reach of the busy downtown. The first phase of the project is set to be completed in 2018, but since the construction is evolving step by step, the very first structure is ready by now.
BIG designed a building complex that echoes the spine of Taiwan’s mountains. The angled shape is a stylised version of the nearby hills, valleys, and canyons, which, nevertheless visually pleasing, is not without any function. Both the orientation and the form of the building play a big part in climate control. The East-West plan blocks glare and minimises exposure to the flat rising and setting sun, while the steep roofs accommodate solar collectors and a landscaped garden. Shifting the volumes makes the most out of the natural light and the views for each apartment.
While the building’s shape might be extraordinary, in fact this is what makes the inside spaces familiar: the gabled, angled silhouettes recall a more vernacular, traditional architectural style building on the cultural heritage of the region, and ensuring that a visit here is not some otherworldly but a rather relaxing, homely experience.
