Shift Architecture's geometric museum extension
For both of the new single-standing structures, their shapes are quite self-evident, adhering to their functions to the maximum,. The Cube houses a gallery space, which is the first dedicated design museum in the country.
The sphere contains the Colombus Earth Theatre, which is National Geographic’s first 3D cinema in Europe. The screening room is situated partially underground as a form of tribute to the town’s mining past.
The same is true for the passageway connecting the two buildings; the subterranean plaza was made out of board-marked red concrete, bringing in a sense of movement and energy with the vivid colour.
Red appears elsewhere as well: the beam, which contains the hallway connecting the old and new structures, is standing on bright red trusses. The three structures form a strict geometrical composition, which is loosened up by the interplay of matte and reflective finishes.
