Zostera Stool proves that eelgrass can be beautiful and useful

Eelgrass has a double reputation; while for people growing up on the seaside its smell and texture can evoke nostalgic feelings, it is also considered useless and disturbing. The thousand tones of eelgrass accumulating on the Northern Sea coast of Germany form a brown carpet on the sand, much to the displeasure of tourists who expect clean beaches. Consequently, the zostera marina mass is taken away to special landfills, left to an even more futile existence - something that goes completely against today’s recycling-oriented culture.

To see what eelgrass might be capable of, Carolin Pertsch set out to experiment with ways to make the material durable, shapeable, and adaptable to various uses. Finally, she found an eelgrass fibre reinforced eco-plastic mixture, that also contains bio-resin produced from vegetable oil. The material is lightweight, stable, and displays the unique aesthetic qualities of eelgrass, recalling in looks and touch regular cork. As a bonus, with hand-picking fibres according to colour, the material is available in a range of natural shades.

In order to let people experience the excellent qualities of eelgrass mass, and to draw their attention to the possibilities of resourcing waste, Pertsch came up with a simple stool featuring a seat made of the material. Creating an object for everyday use is a great way to demonstrate through a hands-on experience how durable, useful, and beautiful eelgrass can be. The Zostera Stool, with its 1 cm “thickness” and universal design will surely convince many to find inspiration in unexpected places.
