SCP reissues Gio Ponti's mid-century classics
SCP has just reissued a compact collection of Gio Ponti designs. Ponti, an architect by education, took a step towards furniture design early on, infusing the two fields by his passion for functional aesthetics. As one of the leading figures of 20th century industrial design, he was also active on the arts and academia domains as well, and even founded architecture and design magazine Domus. Being active for 50 years and always pushing his theoretical approach and style to new realms, he left an indelible imprint not only on the Italian but international design heritage as well.
The new SCP collection pays an homage to the great master, reviving some of his most successful or previously very limited designs. Molteni & C, who were invited to the production part of the work, collaborated closely with Ponti’s heirs in order to create pieces that are as faithful to the master’s initial concepts as possible. The armchair, coffee table, and chest of drawers are based on original prototypes and sketches, executed with the utmost care and attention to quality.
The D.153.1 armchair, that Ponti designed for his private home in Milan in 1953, features a brass frame covered with either bicolour leather or Ponti’s very own velvety Punteggiato fabric.
The D.552.2 coffee table also speaks of mid-century design traditions. Created originally for the American market, the solid rosewood frame coupled with rounded clear glass triangle tabletop is nostalgically current in contemporary settings as well.
Finally, the D.655.1 and D.655.2 chest of drawers are taken from the long line of iconic pieces Ponti created between 1952 and 1955. The combination of all kinds of exquisite woods from elm through mahogany to Italian walnut make the piece outstanding and ooze lasting quality.
