Frits Henningsen's 'Signature' chair reissued by Carl Hansen & Søn
Carl Hansen & Søn has reissued Frits Henningsen’s mid-century Signature Chair. While flicking through the company’s archives, some sketches of the chair appeared, and its timeless design convinced the crew that it would be worth putting back to production. Henningsen was known for his uncompromising work ethics, relying exclusively on 19th century craftsmanship methods. He executed each of his designs by hand in his very own workshop, and rarely let production process slip out of his surveillance. Carl Hansen & Søn was one of the two companies he trusted and collaborated with for the manufacturing process.
Now, after a close common work fit Henningsen’s heirs, the Signature chair is taken up to the company’s repertoire. Its gently bent wooden framework was refreshing on only amongst the overdose of sharp modernist pieces typical of the age of its birth in 1952, but it still very much relevant today. Instead of straight lines, Henningsen favoured curvaceous shapes that carry a homely air and are more comfortable. Constituted of a single curved piece forming the seat and back on a wooden base of solid oak or walnut, covered with leather or fabric upholstery, the Signature chair looks indeed inviting - and is now up for grab at the Danish company’s website and showroom.
