Pebble-shaped pool house raised in New Delhi garden
An existing 20-year-old residence got an interesting extension in New Delhi by 42 mm Architecture: along the garden pools, a new structure was raised as an enclosed entertainment space when guests are coming over. With its 400 sqm floorspace, the pebble-like structure is more than an upgraded garden pavilion or summerhouse: it is a singular entity on its own with two rooms and maximum lounging comfort and services.
Its most striking feature is nevertheless its shape and material: it is made of a thick loop of concrete that was folded to constitute the walls, flooring, and roof with one continuous line. As the idea of a lounging room is not entirely compatible with the rustic, industrial material, the front and back facades are entirely glazed, allowing a full view of the garden and creating a see-through experience from both sides. The greyness of concrete is further softened by the wooden volume separating the two rooms, and wood appears in other parts of the interior as well.
Yet, concrete was a deliberate and very much well-founded choice: it makes the curvy structure resemble a pebble in the grass, nodding to organic architecture, while it is also referencing the original building a few feet away. The result is an authentic, modest, yet absolutely stunning structure that fits seamlessly to its environment.
