Innovative community housing by LAN Architecture
LAN Architecture completed an extremely innovative project in Bèlges, France called Carré Lumière. A 72-apartment building was raised as commissioned by property management company Ataraxia. The construction, finished this november in the suburbs of Bordeaux, is part of a larger scale urban development programme led by the local government, seeking new propositions within community housing and the building industry. LAN were commissioned to fulfil 4 core aims with the apartment block raised in place of two misused towers.
First of all, it had to reinvent the relation between private and societal functions, finding a layout and structure that keeps the two in ideal balance. Each of the The Bèlges apartments feature 4 facades, thus they work just like single family homes without the negative environmental, social, and economical effects of the latter.
Secondly, the space had to be built so that it would be capable of expanding in adherence to the owners’ lifestyle. Residents are free to take more (or less) space if needed without any permissions. Also, each apartment features a winter garden that is up to any function.
The third consideration was an economical one: prices had to be kept as low as possible, and the architects and developers achieved this by dismissing any unnecessary actors on the sales field. Builders and buyers are almost directly connected, which resulted in half less sqm price that is typical for the district.
The last specification LAN had to fulfil were related to climatic effects, leading to the composition of a specific and sustainable climate control mechanism. The architecture office was inspired both by Nordic, heavily insulating solutions, and the patio-structure typical of the Mediterranean reason. As such, Carré Lumière is adjusting itself to the changing seasons. Residence have certain freedom in adjusting the climate control system of their own homes, by utilising the winter garden as a windbreak, greenhouse, or cooling unit.
