The Balancing Barn is located on a beautiful lake in the English countryside near Thorington, Suffolk. The Barn’s architecture and engineering respond dramatically to the picturesque natural setting. It’s a place where nature meets modern architecture. The Barn is furnished to a high standard of comfort and elegance in order to engage its temporary inhabitants with a new way to experience the countryside.
The Barn is 30 meters long and has a 15 meter cantilever plunging the house headlong into nature. Thanks to a balancing act, 50% of the Barn hanging freely in space. “The structure balances on a central concrete core, with the section that sits on the ground constructed from heavier materials than the cantilevered section. The Barn's metal facade reflects its natural surroundings and the changing seasons.”
The building is comprised of a kitchen, a large dining room, a series of four double bedrooms each with separate bathroom and toilet. A hidden staircase can be found in the middle from where one can reach the garden beneath. At the end of the building there is a large living space with windows in three of its walls; the full height sliding windows and roof lights throughout the house ensure continuous views of and access to nature. The Barn is highly energy efficient as it is insulated, ventilated by a heat recovery system and heated by a ground source heat pump.
