1980s Dalkeith Residence updated by Hillam Architects
Australian studio Hillam Architects did some major touch-ups to a residence in the outskirts of Perth. The Dalkeith Residence was built in the 1980s, with a strong character typical of the age, and the Hillam team did not shy away from hitting a bold tone themselves. The brickwork original was extended with a set of dramatic alterations and additions, communicating the house’s presence towards the street more. A number of new canopies, one on the street facade, were elevated and amalgamated with the existing structures, along with the addition of new balconies that lead the visitor’s eye and step.
The 1500 sqm site was also transformed, seeing the addition of a new driveway, a gatehouse, and even a guest wing, with the large rear garden now featuring a new pool, a spacious cabana, and another outbuilding.
The inner layout structure was left more or less untouched, as there was no need to relocate the ideally placed bedroom and kitchen, that both connect to the outside, making the best out of the views and opening up towards the garden. Furniture was renewed, echoing in cladding the new timber finish of the exterior, that are were essential for bringing in warmth to the geometric cavalcade of the overall structure.
The insides' Blackbutt cladding and floors are in harmony with the kitchen cabinets updated with blackened timber veneer, keeping the interior in a bold yet minimal monochrome - two attributes that are characteristic of the overall, rebuilt residence.
