Stefi Orazi's 'Modernis Estates' book celebrates post-war architecture
Post-war modernist buildings, for some strange reason, have dubious reputation across the globe, and in Britain as well. However, aesthetic considerations set aside, one must recognise the genius these structures carry. Though operating with the simplest geometrical forms, modernist buildings are by no means basic: they were built with function in mind on the first place, reaching far beyond the idea of providing some private space and a roof over one’s head. Modernism, in all forms, was deeply soaked with political and social considerations, and architecture was a crucial field for fulfilling these.
Raised in a purpose-build apartment building, London-born and based graphic designer Stefi Orazi recognised the potential of these houses, and her interest grew into a kind of obsession after setting out to find a modernist flat for herself. Her enquiries on the property market led her to compile a blog, Modernist Estate, where she collects not only mid-century apartments for sale or rent, but she shares her investigations on its dwellers, architects, interior solutions, and related design accessories.
The vast accumulated material is now edited into a beautifully-designed book Modernist Estates - The buildings and the people who live in them nowadays. The title summarises the contents aptly, that explore 21 of London’s modernist buildings along their architects and residents, while giving insight into the social and political context of their history.
A series of interviews and contemporary photographs lead the reader, who get a comprehensive overview of how post-war and contemporary lifestyles meet. Orazi’s background in graphic design ensures that a book is not only an enjoyable read, but quite an experience just to flick through. With the author’s photographs and pretty typography, the edition can be a perfect coffee-table book and an inspirational Christmas present.
