Spy Studio's comprehensive identity for Oxford University Church

Though the term “rebranding” might seem strange when speaking of a church, it is absolutely legitimate for religious organisations to wish for a consistent visual identity. After the refurbishment of the Oxford University Church in 2012, it became evident that an update in the online and print communication material was also much needed that would match the stunningly renovated building.

The process was supervised by rev Alan Ramsey who, coming from a designer and account director background, was aware of the significance and value of visual language. He commissioned Spy Studio to create an identity that would appeal to the various and very diverse target groups including students, tourists, and of course conglomerate members.

Even though, according to Ramsey, church associates at Oxford are generally open-minded, designers at Spy also had to reflect on the 700 year old history of the community while creating a contemporary imagery. Also, the church by now is a home not only of Christian services but hosts a series of non-religious events like talks, concerts, and readings.

The new identity is centered around Brown, a slanted device, which reflects upon Oxford’s motto ‘The Lord is my Light’. The unique design is used along the commercial typeface Publico that has a 21st century, modern feel, and refers to the rich typographic stone carving heritage of the church. Spy’s branding pack included a new website, leaflets, visitor information, signage, a book about church history, and also a toolkit that the conglomerate are free to use when designing brochures or event posters.

The pack was made complete with Christian Sinibaldi’s photography, who was invited to compose a new image library of the Church. Instead of capturing services and religious acts, Sinibaldi focused on architectural details in reportage-style close-ups of the building. The identity overall is void of any overt religious motifs, which is important for attracting new visitors and makes identifying with the venue easier for those who attend secular events. It gives the impression of a contemporary, intellectual workshop with a rich and trusted history.
