Nopi releases cookbook as elegant as the restaurant's interior
Designer cookbooks are somewhat of a trend now, which is no wonder regarding that design and gastronomy go hand in hand. Nowadays even the smallest eateries are laying great emphasis on making their outlet at least looking trendy, while more serious players follow a comprehensive and coherent visual language from serving the dishes to the logo on the serviette. Gastronomy provides probably the biggest playground for designers as it incorporates all creative fields like graphic design, architecture, ceramics, textile, and so forth. So when a restaurant decides to publish a cookbook, it works basically as a synthesis of its identity - see the case of Nopi.
Yotan Ottolenghi’s Soho outlet operates with golden brass and white details, white marble tables featuring golden less, white glass floors, and light fittings and coat hooks. Their logo, featured across napkins, water bottles, menu cards, etc, is a golden O, that refers to the plate shape and the owner’s name as well. Everything design-related is the work of multi-disciplinary studio Here, who were recently commissioned to put together a cookbook featuring Nopi’s most popular dishes.
The creative team translated the strikingly elegant interior into an equally beautiful publication: the cookbook operates with white, gold, and charcoal palette. The cover features a shakshuka pan, that takes a nod to the O shape. Each section starts with a graphic element illustrating the content that follows, operating with the same minimal visual language as the cover. Typography is from Nopi’s very own art deco-esque typeface, Estils, that, besides the vivid and exquisite photographs of the dishes, adds a bit of movement to the otherwise light-toned pages. The clarity, attention to detail, fine materials already give the impression of an extremely luxurious publication, that is just further strengthened by the golden foiled edges.
