Bond Agency designs custom typeface for children's classic Moomin

Moomin is one of the favourite best-selling children's stories ever. Tove Jansson took Finnish folk mythology and tales set in the dark northern forests as an inspiration. Her (once) mysteriously dangerous troll-type creatures tamed a lot during the years, and by now they seem harmless and kind compared to today’s cartoon monsters. It is almost hard to imagine that the Moomin family was born as a punishment for Jansson’s brothers, as following an argument with them she intended to decorate the bathroom wall with the ugliest creatures she could think of. Some decades later her little trolls are more popular than ever, and by now, Moomin has grown into a brand on its own.
Still somewhat in the celebratory spirit of Jansson’s centenary last year, Helsinki-based studio Bond Agency designed a separate set of fonts for the Moomin brand. The typeface is based on the original typography used in Janssen’s earliest comic strips. The letters, while keep the nostalgic feel and moodiness characteristic of the tale, are clean and contemporary, suitable for a wide range of applications in brand publications.
