If you are in New York City, you have to check this out
On the Grid was built upon the inspiration the Hyperakt team came upon moving to Gowanus, an up-and-coming post-industrial neighborhood of New York City. Being a decidedly under-the-radar area, Gowanus is home to lots of amazing places, unbeknownst to the masses. The Hyperakt team, led by Deroy Peraza started collecting their favorite places to create a selection of the very best the neighborhood has to offer. It quickly dawned on them that this project could be easily scaled to the whole city, or even multiple cities. So they got in touch with similarly discerning design studios around the city, and asked them to curate their own neighborhood. Thus, the South Street Seaport locations were curated by Wasabi Rabbit, East Village was done up by OCD, and Barrel got Little Italy and Nolita. With each studio possessing a unique view, the selections are rather diverse with only one thing unifying them, an eye for detail and a sophisticated taste.
Using On the Grid, you have two view options, a grid-based layout with attractive photos and a map layout that comes in handy when you're trying to search for a spot nearby. There are also categories to filter the results, with gastronomy taking up 4 of the existing 9 categories, the rest being reserved for non-food related endeavours. Navigating the site is easy as can be, and the design is superb, as you would expect from a collaboration of several creative studios.
The project launched just over a month ago, and new neighborhoods are added every week, with Los Angeles coming in July. The Hyperakt team gets numerous offers daily to extend the reach beyond NYC or the USA. While they are busy working on present content and other projects, we are sure On the Grid will extend beyond its current boundaries, bringing curated selections to a larger group of people. Until then, read away on Yelp, and hope you get lucky.
