Moooi's 'Unexpected Welcome' at Salone
Their presentation, titled 'An Unexpected Welcome' took place in a monumental 1,700 m2 space showcasing 21 inspirational settings. 9 of those were home environments, while the remaining 12 were 'poetic haiku compositions', orchestrated to reveal how Moooi's furniture and lighting complements each other. The company also tapped Teheran-born photographer Rahi Rezvani to lend photos for the presentation. His images, measuring 4,5 meters tall served not only as backdrops, but as an integral part to the settings' emotional matrix.
Highlights of the collection include the Charles Chair, a Le Corbusier-esque take on comfortable seating, presented in a colorway straight out of a Mondrian painting. The slightly uplifted posture of the chair lends an air of motion to it, providing a contemporary take on a classic form factor.
Those looking for innovative lighting were also in for a treat. In addition to well-known and well-loved designs like the Raimond Tensegrity floor lamp, Moooi also presented a new lighting collection. The Space-Frame by Wanders is an impressive piece of technology and design, while the Statistocrat is a multifunctional side-lamp sporting clean shapes and lines. The real stand-out of the lighting collection for us was the Coppélia suspended light, designed by Arihiro Miyake. With a three-dimensional wire structure and dozens of LED lights, it's a brilliantly busy and yet graceful object to gaze at.
The company also launched its first carpet collection under the name Moooi Carpets. Using an innovative chromojet printer technology, they are able to produce photo realistic carpet designs at very high resolution. Because of the groundbreaking technical background of the project, they are able to easily make custom carpets with custom designs as one-offs, without requesting a large minimum batch. That sort of flexibility is still very rare in the industry.
With their Salone presentation, Moooi have once again proved that their perspective on design is one-of-a-kind. Balancing on the thin line between art and design, they always manage to get their vision across, partly because they can position themselves so well. The photos of Rahi Rezvani proved to be a great match for Moooi's unique furniture and lighting, lending a distinctive mood to the space on via Savona. A company dedicated to both art and technology, Moooi are one of the prime candidates to lead the approaching revolt in design. If their ambition is any clue, next year will be even bigger.
