'100% Norway' exhibition features design classics and upcoming talents
It is very much typical of Scandinavian countries to appear with a carefully curated, separate section at any design fair or festival across the globe. The reason, obviously, roots in their rich design past and present, and their great belief in its future: design is a national matter, and various central and civil institutions and organisations support the scene. For London Design Festival, Norwegians brought the 100% Norway exhibition, as coordinated by the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture (DogA), the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London, with the professional partnership of Norwegian Icons and Innovation Norway.
The exhibition is the biggest selection of the country’s top designers to date: 33 of the most coveted Norwegian talents are showcased in Tent London between 24 and 27 September. The exhibition title is not an empty marketing tool: this year, curators Benedicte Sunde (DogA) and Peppe Trulsen (Norwegian Icons) paid great attention to keep their selection within the country’s border. Whether an existing classic design, a prototype, or the representation of an innovative idea, everything on display was both designed and manufactured in Norway by Norwegians.
The second most emphasised curatorial statement was that this year the manufacturers were put to the forefront, so processes, materials, innovative solutions are also presented along the fully executed, functional objects. Besides introducing the freshest talents, a dedicated section celebrates Norway’s contribution to mid-century Scandinavian design. The iconic pieces complemented by 21st century ideas give visitors a comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of Norwegian design.
